How bringing a new approach to the table supercharged business growth for Willows Financial Planning

Since leaving the fast-paced world of banking to set up his own financial advice service, Jonathan Causey hasn’t looked back. We worked with Jonathan under our New Markets 2 programme to set Willows Financial Planning on the path to business growth.

We sat down with Jonathan to find out how business is going and why surrounding himself with mentors has been key to his success.

Willows Financial Planning is an independent financial advice service modelled around good old-fashioned honesty. “Bespoke, honest, personalised service that always puts the client first, no matter what”, that’s what director Jonathan Causey says makes his business unique.

Having worked for some of the UK’s biggest banks for several years, Jonathan was growing tired of big corporates in an unrelenting industry. When he was made redundant in 2016 (along with 250 other colleagues), the time seemed right to set up his own business.

Using his own savings, Jonathan took the plunge and Willows Financial Planning Ltd was born. Adjusting from regular monthly pay cheques, to putting all his time, money and energy into making a self-sustaining business was one of the biggest challenges for Jonathan. But all a challenge that has all been worth it.

Today, Jonathan is responsible for over £12 million of client money.

The last two years has certainly seen an impressive level of growth for Willows Financial Planning and this can be put down to Jonathan’s stellar work ethic, staunch values and watertight business planning.

Working with our expert advisor Francine Taylor under the business growth programme, Jonathan was able to identity the strengths and weaknesses within his business. The pair worked closely to map them down and come up with a plan to build and improve on the business model moving forward.

Jonathan says that one of the main takeaways from his time with Francine was around his marketing and social media. He explains: “Francine helped me to understand how putting proper strategies in place is not only essential to attracting new clients and helping the business to grow, but also to reinforce what we do and build our brand values.”

Since working on our business growth programme, Jonathan has received regular, ongoing support and mentoring from our Enterprise Enabler, Ali McGrath.

Talking about the support he receives from Ali, Jonathan says: “We sit down every few months or so and discuss what is happening in the business and look at other things which I could be doing. The support I receive from Ali is amazing - she is such a massive asset to me.

“I think mentors are key to any business, whether you’re a start-up or established business. They can bring things to the table that you've never even thought of before but can totally turn your business around.”

Speaking to Jonathan its clear to see how proud he is of Willows Financial Planning and how far he’s come with the business. And with good reason.

His advice to anyone considering self-employment? “Never rest on your laurels. It’s harder than anyone will ever tell you, but it will also be the best thing you ever do! Calculate the risks, keep looking forward, work hard and make sure you’re structured.”

Jonathan received growth support through our New Markets 2 Programme, which is aimed at women who are running a business focussing on business to business activity in the Liverpool City Region (Liverpool, Sefton, Wirral, St Helens, Knowsley and Halton) and who are ready to take their business to the next level, either by expanding their team or significantly increasing turnover.

Helping EasyTots take its first steps to international growth

Helen Davies, founder of EasyTots needed help to secure funding to take her product to the international stage. Since approaching The Women’s Organisation, Helen has secured £80k in funding and taken her product worldwide, from Europe to South Korea, Australia and beyond.

We caught up with Helen to find out how business is going and what’s in store for 2019…

Anyone who has experienced feeding time with a little one will know that it can be a messy business. This is where EasyTots’ unique range of baby feeding products come in.

Designed to make it easier for babies to feed independently throughout the weaning process (that’s the transition from milk to solid foods), the EasyMat has quickly become a must-have in the baby feeding world.

Helen’s flagship product, the EasyMat is the world’s first compact and foldable suction plate. It’s designed to make the weaning process easier for little ones aged between 3 months to three years. The placemat encourages exploration and independence at meal times, helping to foster a lifelong love of food.

Since launching her first product in March 2016, Easy Tots now carries 21 products in its range with even more in the pipeline for the New Year.

Helen explains that the aim is to carry a full range of weaning-led dinner ware products, adding to the current range of placemats, spoons, cutlery and bibs. All EasyTots products are designed to be complimentary to create a complete dining set, with a range of colours available.

As a proud mum to two girls, Helen first developed the idea of a range of products dedicated to the weaning journey whilst on maternity leave with her youngest daughter.

Helen tells us how meal times often ended up with more food on the floor than on the plate. After discovering this was a common problem for parents, she decided to see what products were on the market but couldn’t find the right solution for her family.

She explains that developers in America had made some headway, but there was still a major gap in the UK market. And so, the EasyMat was born.

Keen to develop the idea, Helen went on an e-commerce course where she learned about the practicalities of selling using online platforms such as Amazon.

After 12 years building up a commercial window cleaning business as Managing Director, Helen decided it was time to pursue EasyTots and dedicate herself to growing the product.

She says: “I just had a gut feeling that I needed to run with it and work to make the product reach its full potential.”

She sold the commercial cleaning business and launched herself into EasyTots full time.

After a whirlwind start to the business, quickly building momentum on social media, EasyTots soon entered an exciting stage of business growth. Helen was referred to The Women’s Organisation where she received support under the New Markets 2 programme.

In order to secure the funding needed to take the business to the next level, Helen needed a watertight cash flow forecast for the next two years.

Working with business advisor Claire Pedersen, Helen received “fantastic support” over a number of sessions to put the forecast together. This enabled Helen to secure £80k in funding from Merseyside Special Investment Fund (MSIF) to fund the growth of her business into international trade.

What started in St Helens, is now a worldwide product. EasyTots is exporting across Europe, with a large customer base in South Korea and now Australia and New Zealand.

International success is not without its challenges, though. Helen explains that managing shipping and cash flow require tight management, alongside striking the balance in exporting in the B2B market, whilst continuing sales directly to consumers.

At the tender age of two, the business has seen a lot of traction. This year alone, Helen is celebrating two prestigious award wins. Winning Retail Business of the Year at the MIB awards just last week, Helen also picked up a WeAreTheCity Top 100 Rising Stars Award earlier this year.

It’s certainly been an exciting couple of years for Helen and we’re sure we’re going to be seeing a lot more of EasyTots over the next few years. With ongoing talks taking place with some big names, watch this space…

Why LinkedIn Should be Part of Your Growth Strategy

The majority of people mainly associate LinkedIn with job searching and increasing their own personal professional network, LinkedIn also as the same significance in relation to forming business relationships and helps to direct your business to valuable sales leads.

A company page on LinkedIn will offer your organisation with the chance to express your brand story, which will encourage followers to interact and engage by sharing your content for other LinkedIn viewers to see. Furthermore, LinkedIn also displays your public image on an international level as a reliable company.

The following tips can help your organisation be viewed on a much wider scale and therefore should be apart of your overall business growth strategy.

1. LinkedIn allows for your company to differentiate from their competitors.

On LinkedIn, you can provide a description about your organisation to highlight the unique attributes about your organisation and how you differ from your competitors. It should comprise the latest organisation news and share information about the culture, values, mission and vision to increase the views of your business.

Another way to differentiate from your competitors is by providing visual aspects to your brand storytelling. Visual content in the form of videos, photos and artwork will provide your followers with a sense of trustworthiness and an optimistic feeling about your organisation and provides users with a clear idea of how your business thinks and acts.

2. Increase your ranking in search engines

Search engines favour LinkedIn company pages and posts. Therefore, by providing regular updates to your company page and enhancing posts for SEO will increase your search engine ranking in the results page. This will develop your business, with more viewers interacting and engaging with your organisation and the offerings, with the rise of online traffic you could receive through LinkedIn.

3. Search states that LinkedIn may be most effective platform for product launches.

LinkedIn as now become the main channel to introduce products. This is because LinkedIn has a bigger influence on how to spread the latest product news with a much bigger reach to the media, bloggers, and customers. According to polling done by Regalix, LinkedIn is now the #1 platform used for product launches among B2B businesses. A whopping 81% of B2B businesses say they use LinkedIn for launches, compared to 71% who use Twitter and just 54% who use Facebook.

4. Checking on what your competition is doing.

By viewing your competitors LinkedIn pages, it is a simpler way to observe any changes which could be taking places within your industry which could have some impact within your business. You can also take notice to what your competitors are currently doing and have achieved in which you could use to your own advantage by obtaining ideas which could be implemented for your own business.

This will ensure that your business will be staying relevant by keeping up to date with the latest trends and ensuring that you will not fall behind with your competitors. Therefore, this is an important factor in developing growth within your business. According to the Content Marketing Institute, 94% of B2B marketers use LinkedIn to distribute content, making it the social media platform used most often.

5. Create awareness and improve reputation.

LinkedIn is a social media for professionals. Research suggests that more than two professionals every second are now creating a profile and signing up to LinkedIn, and organisations currently have the chance to interact with a growing number of different contacts. By using different features LinkedIn offers, organisations can increase their visibility and credibility.

The maker space making its mark on Liverpool's creative scene

The Make Liverpool team approached The Women’s Organisation for business development support under our growth programme; New Markets 2. We caught up with co-director Kirsten Little to find out how business is going.

Kirsten Little, co-director of Make Liverpool

Describing itself as ‘a place to play, make and fix; bring an idea and take away your invention,’ Make Liverpool is a maker space which crosses the boundaries. It’s a place where digital and creative businesses work alongside artists and crafters, offering up a creative hub for honest conversations and unique skill shares.

The brainchild of co-directors Kirsten Little and Liam Kelly, the team are on a mission to support makers, artists and small businesses across Liverpool.

Communal space at Make Liverpool

It all started back in 2012 with a post from Liam on Facebook venturing the idea of a unique co-working space for creative makers. Having experienced first-hand the isolation of working remotely and the impact this can have on your mental health, Liam set his sights on opening a co-working space. The post immediately caught Kirsten’s eye. Having recently completed her masters degree in fine art it was the ideal next challenge.

The pair set off on a research mission, taking inspiration from maker spaces across Europe. 4 months later and their Baltic Triangle space was born and already filled with nearly 30 residents from a whole host of creative backgrounds. From those working in graphic design and photography to fine art, Kirsten says that it is this diverse skill set which has been the catalyst for their success.

Make resident, Max Rawhide hard at work

Fast forward four years and the team soon saw the need for a second space. Kirsten explains: “The problem with the Baltic space was that we couldn’t offer maker spaces and our residents wanted to grow their businesses without having to invest in equipment. One of our tenants needed access to a laser cutter to create her product meaning that she had to outsource this element, a cost which would ultimately impact on the final cost of her product. We wanted to create a one-stop shop of equipment where our residents could freely create and experiment.”

Make North Docks was born.

Another maker, Chris Wylie of Puppetuity

With their sights firmly set on business growth and having received support from The Women’s Organisation at the inception of the company, the team decided it was time to return to the organisation to find out what support was available as they entered this new era of high business growth.

Working closely with our business advisor, Francine Taylor, the Make team were able to identify new opportunities in the current business and gain the support to enter this new phase.

Of their time with Francine, co-director Liam says: "Francine was very supportive and easy to talk with. It’s great having knowledgeable and trustworthy people around you when you’re focused on growing a businesses."

With a third venue now in the pipeline, there’s no sign of Make Liverpool slowing down now.

Kirsten and the team received growth advice through our New Markets 2 Programme. part funded by European Regional Development Fund. The programme is aimed at women who are running a business focussing on business to business (B2B) activity in the Liverpool City Region (Liverpool, Sefton, Wirral, St Helens, Knowsley and Halton) and are ready to take their business to the next level, either by expanding their team or significantly increasing turnover.

A business growth story: It’s a family affair at Lewis Howes Signs & Engraving Ltd

Lewis Howes Signs & Engraving Ltd have been providing a quality service to the people of Liverpool since 1988 and it’s safe to say that the business has come a long way in that time. Run by husband and wife duo, David and Fran Lewis, with a little help from daughter Becky Sheen and her husband, Graham, Lewis Howes Signs & Engraving is well and truly a storybook family-run business. With Becky and Graham preparing to take over the family business, the team needed a stellar transition strategy to help pave the way for a new era of growth and success.

The team approached The Women’s Organisation for business development support under our growth programme; New Markets 2. We sat down with Becky to find out how our business advisor, John Jones, helped the family to prepare a business valuation and transition strategy...
Lewis Howes Signs & Engraving as its known today

The team approached The Women’s Organisation for business development support under our growth programme; New Markets 2. We sat down with Becky to find out how our business advisor, John Jones, helped the family to prepare a business valuation and transition strategy.

So, what’s Lewis Howes Signs & Engraving all about? Sign manufacturing is the bread and butter of the business, which specialises in high quality engraving on a range of materials. From nameplates and badges, to memorial plaques and switch plates, the team have seen it all. Over time a complete sign service has been developed, now offering a full service from design through to manufacture, installation and maintenance.

Perhaps the biggest change came in 2006 as Lewis Howes diversified in to digital printing, a change which managing director, David, dubs as ‘the best move we ever made’. Proof that businesses need to keep up the times and embrace new technologies. The firm has also recently invested in a state of the art new Rowland printer, as well as a laser cutting machine, allowing them to offer much quicker delivery times.

With a strong service offering that has proved the test of time, we asked what makes Lewis Howes unique? Becky says: “Reliability, speedy service and quality, bespoke products. Everything that we do is bespoke - there’s very little we can’t turn our hand to.”

Formerly David Lewis Signs, the past 28 years have seen a lot of change within the business. Originally based in Wallasey on the Wirral, David Lewis Signs was born in 1988, before merging with J & J Howes just two years later to becomes Lewis Howes Signs & Engraving. More change was still to come and in 2001 Dave and Fran Lewis bought out John and Jackie Howes to take sole ownership of the business.

David Lewis' first shop in 1988
Over this time, the firm has built a stellar, dedicated team of 15 staff - 8 of which were there on the very first day of trading in 1988 - enabling them to grow and develop the business into the respected name it is today.

By the mid-noughties the business was thriving and trade was strong. When the recession hit in 2008, the management team went to great lengths to keep the business going and admit that they still feel the effects of it 10 years later. Becky says that “this time has been the most difficult for the business, but also a great achievement” to weather the crash. After a number of hard and turbulent years, the company is now starting to slowly progress and grow.

After approaching The Women’s Organisation for support in taking the business to the next phase, the team was set up with business advisor, John Jones, under the New Markets 2 dedicated growth programme. Becky commented: “John has been excellent for us, offering advice and in constant contact.”

What would Becky say to those looking to grow their business in the North West? “The region is fairly robust at the moment. For those looking to grow I would say: provide high quality products, on time and at competitive prices.” Great advice!

Becky Sheen will be taking the reins of the family business

Becky and her family received growth advice through our New Markets 2 Programme, which is aimed at women who are running a business focussing on business to business activity in the Liverpool City Region (Liverpool, Sefton, Wirral, St Helens, Knowsley and Halton) are who are ready to take their business to the next level, either by expanding their team or significantly increasing turnover. Integrity Is The Key To Business Success For The ADHD Foundation & Dr Tony Lloyd

Last year the ADHD Foundation celebrated its 10th birthday. That’s a decade of commitment to; ‘improving life chances through better understanding and management of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)’ and what a decade it has been…

The ADHD Foundation, in their own words; ‘works in partnership with individuals, families, doctors, teachers and other agencies to improve emotional well-being, educational attachment, behaviour and life chances, through a better understanding and self-management of ADHD, ASD and related learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, Irlen’s Syndrome, dyscalculia and Tourette’s Syndrome.’

They also provide training to professionals and raise awareness to bring positive change and inclusion. One of their awareness raising activities you may have noticed if you happened to be waling down Church Alley in Liverpool city centre last year…200 colourful umbrellas suspended in the air as if they were floating down from the sky!

These huge splashes of colour that were there to raise awareness and understanding and encourage discussion around ADHD and autism, and aptly called; ‘The Umbrella Project’ Each individual umbrella was personally signed by children from St Oswald’s primary school in Old Swan, and across Merseyside, many of whom have ADHD, autism and other neurodevelopment conditions.

Dr Tony Lloyd, CEO of the ADHD Foundation said; ‘ADHD and autism are ‘umbrella terms’ for a whole variety of neurodevelopment difficulties, and we want to highlight that fact and challenge the stigma of what can be ‘invisible’ disabilities. The Umbrella Project is about reminding adults – be it parents, teacher or potential employees – that young people with ADHD are other conditions possess many gifts, talents and skills to offer their communities. Their condition is not a disabler, but an enabler, a superpower!’

The work that the ADHD Foundation is incredible and so important, and The Women’s Organisation feel lucky to have been able to support them over the past year to grow under our business growth programme; New Markets 2. Dr Tony Lloyd has been working closely with Enterprise Enabler, Ali McGrath and Senior Business Adviser, Janine Hyland on growing the business and accessing finance.

Ali says; ‘We’ve helped Tony with refinancing the business and been able to secure them funding and a significant grant with First Ark to help grow the business. Janine worked with Tony on a future-proofed growth business plan to assist in setting up a separate trading company CIC to generate new revenue for charity purposes so they are secure and sustainable for the coming years.’

Over the past ten years the ADHD Foundation has grown from strength to strength and at The Women’s Organisation it has been great to support that growth. During those ten years Tony told us that; ‘The business has grown from having a £90,00 turnover in 2010 to a £700,000 turnover in 2017-18 and we now have key partnerships across all sectors as well as being the leading provider of trainings to schools in the UK.’

And what is Tony’s key to success? He told us it was this…

‘Innovation! And…Having multiple income streams that weather any challenges to funding. Now, as a charity we have a strong business model. In my business journey I have learnt the importance of integrity. Integrity in business is everything, in the face of challenges being ‘values’ driven is an important motivator.’

And what plans does Tony have for the future of the ADHD Foundation…
‘We will continue to demonstrate that the Liverpool region is a model of excellence and that social capital is key to success.’

Dr Tony Lloyd and the ADHD Foundation were supported by The Women’s Organisation under our New Markets 2 programme for businesses focussing on business to business activity in the Liverpool City Region (Liverpool, Sefton, Wirral, St Helens, Knowsley and Halton) area who are ready to take their business to the next level, expanding their team and significantly increasing turnover.

AND...We've been told by Tony and the team to let you know that you should keep looking UP for the umbrellas as they are due to pop up again in the near future!

Cath & Liz Realised That If They Wanted Massive Business Growth, They'd Have To Change Their Approach

Cath Kerr and Dr Liz Royle

have over 40 years experience between them in psychological trauma, which is rare in their field. With a PhD and a Masters under their belts, these two women were well equipped to make their specialist knowledge a business venture.

Cath Kerr
Dr Liz Royle

Both Cath and Liz shared a desire to set up their own business, meeting for the first time at a CPD (Continuing Professional Development) group for trauma, they realised the possibilities and that two heads would certainly be better than one.

They set up KRTS International in 2010, offering one-to-one advice on dealing with trauma to individuals. Although going well, the business needed to grow and both women wanted to help more people. They decided to completely change their business model in 2016.

The women said: “We took a major leap of faith by stopping providing one to one services and then putting all our resources into working directly with businesses and creating further online products.”

Under the umbrella of KRTS International, the women have launched various e-health programmes offering psychological and wellbeing solutions for organisations to employ in their workforce. For example, KRTS Power to Recover can help a work organisation to strategically prepare for and respond to workplace trauma.

The women are preparing to launch a new programme which will have an accompanying app called KRTS Power to Lose Weight. The idea is being supported by Liverpool John Moores University, and aims to help people lose weight by addressing the mindset of losing weight, rather than the traditional approach of restricting your diet.

With a well-established business in place, getting business advice may not have seemed so essential. However, Cath and Liz knew about the work of The Women’s Organisation. The women booked to see senior business adviser Claire Pederson, who was able to advise them on growing their business and support them under the growth programme; New Markets 2.

They said: “We have had some amazing support from The Women’s Organisation, including a revamped business plan, financial advice, general advice and they have put us in touch with new projects such as LJMU, which has helped us move one of our projects on considerably.

“Besides all of this, they have always been as passionate as we are about what we do, and they believe in our ability.”

The women say getting amazing feedback, makes the work they do all the more worthwhile. They are driven by their passion for their subject and only work with people who share their values and vision – “We live by the motto if you love what you do, you will never have to work a day in your life”.

Their business is so specialist, that they’ve had to branch out to international markets. Fortunately, the women are in a prime position to grow their business, seeing as what they offer is applicable to such a wide range of organisations, across the world.

KRTS now have large clients on board and with their new weight loss programme in the pipeline, more growth seems likely.

Cath and Liz received growth advice through; 'Women's Growth Accelerator' New Markets 2 Programme, which is aimed at women who are running a business focussing on business to business activity in the Liverpool City Region (Liverpool, Sefton, Wirral, St Helens, Knowsley and Halton) area who are ready to take their business to the next level, expanding their team and significantly increasing turnover. For more information contact us on hello@thewo.org.uk or 0151 706 8111

Caz's Kitchen | A Cake Institution 🍰

Caz’s Kitchen is an institution.

If you haven’t heard of this little nugget of gold located on St John’s Road in Waterloo, where have you been? Caz’s Kitchen might be defined by some as simply a cake shop, but to those who know, it is so much more than that!

Caz and her team supply cakes to local restaurants, coffee shops and delis, but customers can also enjoy her gorgeous cakes in her quirky little premises. Caz also sells whole cakes, desserts, tartes, tortes, cheesecakes and puddings, plus cake platters and cake towers for parties and functions and even wedding cakes!

But Caz’s speciality is cakes for specific dietary requirements, what’s so unique about Caz’s cakes is that they are REAL. She uses nothing artificial in her cakes, choses butter over margarine and the flavours come from in-house roasted nuts, Belgian couverture chocolate and fruits from her allotment. In fact, everything about Caz herself, her kitchen and her team is REAL. When we visited Caz at her Waterloo premises on St John’s Road she told us; ‘We are passionate about ‘proper’ cake. Good food is good for the soul and a well-deserved treat (not a chemical cake from the supermarket) is a beautiful thing!’

As well as real, proper cake, Caz has also developed a range of innovative treats, her HappyHealthyYum range; ‘These are gluten free, dairy free, vegan, refined sugar free treats that are designed to fill you up and satisfy you with slow releasing energy and are chock full of superfood, vitamins and minerals.’ – So, it seems that you can have your cake and eat it too with Caz!

The journey to Caz’s Kitchen has been a long one though, and we were delighted to sit down with the woman herself; Caroline Hill, and get the full story!

Before Caz started her business, she graduated with a degree in Food Science & Nutrition and began to work in the field of Product Development, working on new products for most of the major retailers starting with a job in Safeways and then moving on to developing chilled desserts for Marks & Spencer.

‘I was the person that worked with a chef on a kitchen recipe then project managed that recipe to become mass producible. I would work alongside buyers, a production team and technical and engineering departments to taste recipes in a test kitchen and then the pilot plant before they went into full production.’

Matt Wilkinson Photography
Caz says that when she first started this job there was a massive buzz when she would see her products on the supermarket shelves at the end of an exhausting project. But, things began to change. Caz began working for a smaller company and found that the job became less about researching the marketplace adequately and all the other details and processes that make up developing a proper product, it became more about the bottom line.

‘When I started my career in Product Development I was developing 10 products over the space of a 6-month critical path. By the end I was juggling 200 products with a 3-week turnaround from concept to launch. And the products that were being launched were rubbish.’

Caz is a pro-independent, massive foodie who is down to earth, friendly, unpretentious, caring and ethical, so it might not come as much of a surprise that she decided at this point, a future of developing products from big brand supermarkets wasn’t for her!

This was over 10 years ago, next Caz decided she would try and set up her own business, a coffee shop and deli and she got in touch with The Women’s Organisation, back when were known as Train 2000, and we helped Caz with a business plan. Now she is back in the fold of The Women’s Organisation again, working closely with Senior Business Adviser; Claire Pedersen on our growth programme; New Markets 2.

But, rewind to 10 years ago when Caz began working on her own business plan; ‘A deli and coffee shop in my local community. It would be ethical, it would be cosy, it would support other local businesses and it would be healthy and wholesome.’

Caz negotiated on numerous premises for this business, after a few years and a series of knockbacks she started to feel that maybe it just wasn’t to be; ‘I was starting to run out of steam on hunting for the right place, it was all consuming; planning and hunting and failing to be successful in bidding for properties for one reason or another. So I just put it out of my mind for a while.’

During these years Caz worked for numerous start-up foodie businesses in Liverpool and small businesses that were looking to develop; ‘I was working on and off for various SME’s in all aspects of their business, office, front of house and cheffing. I was enjoying assisting other people with their start-ups and offering help and advice in the areas that I have good knowledge of from my years in the food industry. As well as this I was also gaining more relevant experience within the independent sector.’

Caz now sees this as invaluable as it formed the perfect building block on which to base her own business. ‘I actually started baking from home alongside my day job as a bit of a favour to a friend. I never at that point thought it would become a full-time thing! But actually, it suited me as I’m generally less of a cheffy chef and more of a control freak with my cooking, a tip of the hat to how I was trained working for the supermarkets, always working to very strict specifications and recipes.

‘Baking was something that combined my love of food but also my nature of precision and accuracy. Baking is a science and I have a Food Science degree! It was then that the thought of baking as a way to earn a crust was born.’

As word spread about Caz’s cakes and the contracts increased, she took the plunge and after 3 years of baking from home moved to the premises on St Johns Road in Waterloo. The name ‘Caz’s Kitchen’ was derived from the fact that it did start in her own kitchen!

Caz then got back in touch with The Women’s Organisation and began to work with Claire on our growth programme; New Markets 2. Claire said; ‘When I met Caz her business was doing really well, but she was still running as a sole trader. She needed to professionalise her systems and image and bring it all band up to date with where she is currently with her business. She also wanted to grow and expand the wholesale side of her business. We developed a strategy for growth starting with updating and formalising some current systems, looking a timeline for a rebrand and a new website to be built.’

And Caz has been receiving some fantastic feedback from her customers; ‘We have been blown away with the encouragement and support. Honestly, I am humbled by the positivity surrounding the shop, it means everything to us.’ Because for Caz, it’s not about the hard sell and she says; ‘Our marketing strategy has been more of a whisper than a shout.’ But it’s one that worked, she has a fiercely loyal customer base and is passionate about providing the best for her customers, with their happiness being her priority rather than profit or growth.

Matt Wilkinson Photography
Caz adds; ‘What’s unique about my business is that it is genuine. I haven’t created a business idea to generate money or jump on a bandwagon. It’s something that has come as a natural progression from my previous work. It’s just like everything has come together as a happy coincidence, at the right time for me personally and the right time for my community. I do truly believe that the reason I have such a lovely bunch of supportive customers is because they see the authenticity in me and the shop.’

‘I’m extremely conscious of providing more than just cake. I want all our customers to feel well looked after, welcomed and appreciated. I want to add to my local community and for customers to feel they are very much a part of my business, to put smiles on their lovely faces.’

And what is Caz’s key to success? What would her advice be for other business women? ‘If, at first you don’t succeed, try, try, try again. I pushed so hard to get my first business off the ground and everyone who knows me knows the trials and tribulations I went through trying to set up that business.’

‘In the end I did launch one! Granted it wasn’t the one I was expecting, but in hindsight it was the perfect one for me, combining lots of aspects of my previous work, experience, education and hobbies. I’ve had my allotment for 15 years and never expected to use it as part of my business. It’s also really satisfying to use my nutrition degree and product development experience to create the healthy eating cakes.’

So, what is next for Caz and her kitchen? Caz told us that she would like to just continue along the road that she is already one, and it’s a successful road! ‘I want to carry on doing the best I can for my customers, my staff and my community and continue to support other local businesses and charities. Every day is a school day and I’m learning all the time about how to run a better business.;
