In the Media: Why We Disagree with Dr Christian on using Porn in the Classroom

Should we introduce Pornography in education? The Telegraph cited Dr Christian Jessen well known for his role in Embarrassing Bodies as saying this week “I think it’d be very helpful in sex education to show the distinction between porn and sex as you have it…”. A debate has arisen as it is believed- if our young people are viewing porn anyway, should it be a part of the curriculum?

Our Engagement and Marketing Manager Jo Austin was interviewed by BBC Radio Wales this morning to give her opinion on why we would advise against this strategy.  Here is what she said on facebook following the discussion.

But why was Jo voting ‘no’ on this initiative? Psychology graduate and The Women’s Organisation volunteer Lexine explored this further.

There are many issues raised with pornography over the years, widely accessed and mostly unrestricted, through smart phones or most internet linked devices. With increased access to porn, society has also witnessed an increase in psychological and physical issues: porn addictions, self-esteem issues, normalised sexualised behaviour, sexualised exploration starting younger, and incompetence issues. These are just a starting point, and while some argue that we can’t attribute all of these issues to porn, studies indicate that regular access to porn has educated young people to see porn as an example of normal sexual relationships.

Until March 2017 sex education was not compulsory, only within council-run schools. We have seen movement in recent year in terms of updating sex education for young people, but how effective can be porn be used as a tool to learn?

Those arguing for the benefits of using porn within sex ed tend to present the case for helping young people to visually understand of the act of sex, supporting those who visually learn. With guidance, could showing porn help teach what is wrong with sexual behaviours such as aggressive acts or sexual violence – they argue? However, we'd ask do children really need to be shown this visually through the use of pornography in order to start that discussion?

This argument assumes that every child in the classroom will have been exposed to pornography anyway, so why not use that as a starting point? But consider those who may not have yet.  We may be exposing children and adolescents to visual images that may be quite overwhelming and traumatising, particularly to individuals who are not emotionally prepared. Plus, could showing porn desensitise children to acts of violence or even worse possibly triggering individuals who have suffered sexual abuse themselves?

Pornography does not typically offer a realistic representation of women and men’s bodies and using this as the measuring tool of education within schools could impact on normalising unrealistic body ideals potentially impacting on self-esteem.

Showing adolescents pornography is a greater risk to addiction as their brains are still developing shows a study by Riemersma & Sytsma, 2013, if not amplifying the risk of condoning young people to access porn from a young age by displaying in schools. One particular study showed that pornography consumption is significantly associated with stronger gender-stereotypical sexual beliefs, earlier sexual interaction, increased casual sex behaviour, and increased sexual aggression both as perpetrators and victims (Peter & Valkenburg, 2016). This normalising of sexually violent behaviour could send complete mixed message on what is and isn’t consent and continue the desensitisation or traumatic triggers in our young people. The average age of first perpetration of sexual violence is 15 -16 years old and can be associated with exposure to pornography (Prevention Science, 2017).

Jo told BBC Radio Wales that the week prior to interview she had spent time with trained counselors who noted their fastest growing client group was university students coping with sexual assault.  This, she felt, was indicative of the fact that lack of consent is portrayed as 'sexy' in the porn industry, and building a generation of young people who no longer understand what consent means.

While we appreciate that the current sex education curriculum could use an update, the evidence is clear that exposing young people to pornography isn't a helpful step forward. Instead we would recommend considering involving young people in more frank discussion.  The discussion should look at sex and sexual relationships from health and legal perspectives, emotional intelligence, and delivered from a place of unbias and body empowerment with consent at the heart of it. Sex is an aspect of all individuals lives that children will eventually go on to explore themselves. However, we need to empower young people when the time comes to understand sex from a point of consent, emotional capabilities, boundaries, and physical health. These factors should be prioritised over showing pornography which is certainly not the best example of any of these. It is these conversations and dialogues that will give individuals freedom to speak out against violence, to know where their boundaries lay and feel confident to talk about their sexual health and image in a frank and respectful way.

Fiona Hull Shares Construction Q's Key To Success 🗝️📈

Last week we celebrated our 'Celebration of Success' awards, allowing us to share the fantastic achievements of some of the businesses we have supported with growth. Excelerate Labs continues to support men and women running B2B businesses in the Greater Manchester area looking to innovate, diversify and grow creating new jobs.

We caught up with one of our award winners Fiona Hull, Director of Construction Q, a quantity surveying practice based in Bramhall, Stockport about how they've gone from strength to strength with 6 members of staff and an increased turnover of 750% since their first-year trading. Founded in 2010, Construction Q carry out quantity surveying services on projects from £100,000 to the largest currently at £30,000,000.

After being employed as Quantity Surveyor by a main contractor, The flexible working life and her love for contributing to the professional world of construction persuaded Fiona into self employment.

Fiona told us “After having 2 children I found the juggle between childcare and a full-time job to be impossible. By working for myself I could have flexible working.”

Never destined for a typical female role, Fiona describes her younger self as a “bit of a tomboy” citing her main drive behind her success as her family, her husband, 2 children and golden retriever, Silva. Turning 40 this year, she plans to celebrate by carrying out 40 acts of kindness, including sponsored runs and helping out at local food banks, she also isn't shy when it comes to helping the local community, and most recently spent the day helping out St Anne's hospice by collecting Christmas trees in her van.

Speaking about the support from The Women’s Organisation through Excelerate Labs, Fiona spoke fondly of Business Growth adviser Mike Marsden: “Mike has been fantastic. A great sounding board for ideas but also supportive and full of suggestions. A key strength for me has been the contacts that The Women’s Organisation have and the connections that they have made for me.”

On building links with key brands, Construction Q have several contractors on retainer contracts and repeat business from 12 different architect practices. Speaking about her clients, Fiona comments “These regular clients are hugely important when looking at business growth and the value of the company”

Fiona Hull, Director of Construction Q
Speaking proudly of their Pro Bono work, Construction Q believes it sets them apart from their competitors by putting charity before profit and feel great to be able to contribute

"Despite our expansion and extremely busy office we have carried out 3 Pro Bono projects this year for local charities. One of these, The Joshua Tree Foundation, we continue to support, and all Quantity Surveyor services will be provided free of charge over the next 18 months for this £2m respite centre. These are the projects that excite me. It feels great to have become so successful that we can do this. It’s not all about the bottom line for us.”

And Construction Q’s key to success?

“A lot of our success comes from repeat business and word of mouth. I spent a lot of time networking in the early years, so brand awareness was crucial. We also sponsor local football and cricket teams and support the local schools. If you give time generously to your community then it will come back.”

Construction Q has dealt with issues including clients going into administration whilst owing substantial sums of money, and when asked about the lessons learned during Construction Q's journey, Fiona comments

“Always be straight, trust your instincts and treat others as you wish to be treated, There have been a few battles along the way, but everything happens for a reason and we have come out stronger”

Alongside Construction Q, Fiona also runs another business whilst bringing up her 2 children. Being her own boss allows Fiona to also help with local charity events, coach a under 9 football team and sit on the school PTA. “It’s exhausting but extremely rewarding, my biggest achievement to date is growing a successful award-winning business whilst still being a mum!”

of course, we couldn't not ask who her role models were... "Pep Guadiola, for his drive and ambition, but also managing to remain calm and dignified at all times, I also have a lot of time for many of the individuals involved with the charities I work with"

Construction Q's future looks bright, securing several large commercial projects in recent months and are currently recruiting for 2 new Quantity Surveyor’s. “What is hugely important to me is that we continue to have values and be an ethical business."

and Fiona's last words of advice:

“Work hard, Play hard! It’s been tough, lot more wrinkles and grey hair than when I set out 8 years ago but if you believe in your product, are fully committed, and always put your customer first then you will succeed.”

Thanks Fiona, sounds like there is nothing slowing you down! and so great to hear about the growth and achievements of Construction Q!

Fiona also recently accepted the award at our Excelerate Lab ‘Celebration of Success’ Dinner for Women in Construction Business which you can read all about here

EntreComp Into Action; A User Guide Launches!

For many years, as an organisation, we have worked all across the world and in particular across Europe. Taking part in projects that span countries and help us build relationships with other organisations who have similar missions and visions. This year has been no different as we have been working on producing ‘EntreComp into Action: Get Inspired and Make It Happen’ – a user guide for ‘EntreComp’, the entrepreneurship competence framework developed by The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC).

The JRC, the European Commissions’ science and knowledge service, commissioned The Women’s Organisation in partnership with Bantani Education in Brussels and TAKK Studio in Italy, to carry out this exciting piece of work!

The team created a fascinating and hefty resource which is a deep dive into the European Entrepreneurship Competence Framework and provides a user’s guide on how to foster entrepreneurial learning.

Access EntreComp into Action HERE!

‘EntreComp into Action aims to inspire more actors from across Europe and beyond to get involved, to join a community of practitioners committed to embedding these competences for life into education, communities, work and enterprise.’

So, what is EntreComp?
EntreComp is a comprehensive, flexible and multi-purpose reference framework designed to help you understand what is meant by entrepreneurship as a key competence for lifelong learning and to be able to use this in your work.’

By defining 15 key competences, grouped in 3 areas: Ideas & opportunities; Resources; and Into action, EntreComp helps to create a shared understanding of the knowledge, skills and attributes that make up what it means to be entrepreneurial,

…discovering and acting upon opportunities and ideas, and transforming them into social, cultural, or financial values for others.

In short, EntreComp is for anyone! ‘EntreComp can be used by different actors and is relevant to those interested and working in formal education, non-formal learning and inclusion activities as well as in organisations and businesses of all sizes.’

The user guide, EntreComp Into Action, comprises over 70 case studies and examples of how educators, policy makers and entrepreneurs are applying EntreComp.  It provides an exciting look at what it means to be ‘entrepreneurial’ in today’s world.

The guide provides an introduction to the EntreComp framework and some top tips for getting started for those new to it, as well as detailed descriptions of potential learning outcomes for each of the competences for those applying the framework in a learning environment.

The case studies and examples are categorised in 2 ways, by domain – your area of work, and by goal – what you want to achieve.  This means that you can easily navigate the resource and read those examples relevant to you, whether you’re working in formal education and want to appraise and assess learners’ work; or if you work within an organisation and interested in the impact of entrepreneurial development activities.

One example of how EntreComp can be applied and put into practice is a case study of The Women’s Organisation client Ngunan Adamu, Founder and Director of iWoman media and iWoman Academy. Ngunan explained that ‘EntreComp inspired iWoman Academy to enhance its innovative training programme for women’ through helping participants to appraise and appreciate their current levels of entrepreneurship competence and to inform their future plans.

With great visuals to help explain and share the notion of entrepreneurship competences and practical examples of how to apply the framework the guide is a useful resource for anyone interested in entrepreneurship.

EntreComp into Action is one magnificent feat! And at The Women’s Organisation and Enterprise Evolution we are delighted to have worked on this project and make it possible!

If you want to learn more about EntreComp into Action you can access it HERE! So, give it a read and see how you can develop your own entrepreneurial competencies.

If you would like access to a Chinese translation of the user guide, you can read it here.

“I Fulfilled My Dreams And Made Them A Reality” says Jackie Williams of Ballroom Blitz

Not many people can immediately frame a redundancy as a positive opportunity, but Jackie Williams can, and did! And that business is…Ballroom Blitz! In her own words; ‘Ballroom Blitz offers adult dance classes, socials and events across the Wirral and Liverpool’ and is Jackie’s dream of a lifetime to run!

Prior to starting her own business Jackie worked as a Global Quality Specialist for industry giant; Unilever for almost 20 years but had always danced and had a passion for dancing and everything that it encompasses. ‘For many years I have been joking about retiring onto a cruise ship to teach Ballroom and Latin dancing! So, when my dance school offered the opportunity to qualify as a teacher, I took it!’

Coincidentally this coincided with Unilever offering voluntary redundancy and Jackie saw this as the opportunity she was waiting for; ‘to go and fulfil my dream and make it a reality!’ She told us that she is usually someone who is risk averse so making this decision was huge as the thought of not having a regular income was new and scary. ‘I got around this fear by taking a small part time job, so I had a base income.’

Now that Jackie had her idea she knew it was time to go and get some support and advice; ‘At first, I wrote down all of my ideas and possible venues for the classes and researched the competition that was out there. I also took the opportunity to get in touch with The Women’s Organisation.’ Jackie was paired with Senior Business Adviser; Claire Pedersen who helped her with all aspects of her business start up process.

‘At the start of the process I was extremely nervous as I was stepping out into the unknown. But the thought of this turned to be worse than the reality.’ With the support of Claire, and the courses that Jackie was able to access at The Women’s Organisation, with some hard work and a bit of time…Ballroom Blitz was up and running!

One of the hardest things for Jackie was finding a venue for these classes though, and she says that it took a lot more effort and was more challenging than she originally anticipated. ‘Through talking to lots of people and google searching I found the venues I now use, but since starting in July 2017 I have changed 2 of the 3 initial venues with positive results, so I’d say to others be prepared to change and be flexible in business!’

One of these changes is super recent, and Jackie let us know that as of April 16th 2018, 3 out of 4 of her weekly classes will now be held at Pensby Boys School; 'truly giving Ballroom Blitz an identity and a home!'

Starting initially with 3 nights a week the business has grown and progressed so much that Jackie now runs 4 evenings each week as well as having a number of private clients! She says one of the things that is unique about Ballroom Blitz is that; ‘It’s social! Through offering social Ballroom and Latin dance classes this makes me unique as usually there is lots of focus on medals and competitions. Whereas my passion and mission is to spread the joy of dancing for social pleasure.’

It’s great to see Jackie living out her dreams of dancing and teaching dancing as a full time job, and at The Women’s Organisation we were delighted to support her with this. When we asked Jackie how she felt about what she had achieved so far she told us; ‘Words cannot really describe how I feel! I am immensely proud and thankful. I feel truly blessed for all the support I have had and I’m excited about the future.’

‘This is the happiest I have been in all my life!’

And isn’t that amazing to hear!? If you want to find out more about Jackie’s business; Ballroom Blitz, you can do by following the contact links below…

And if you’d like to turn your dreams into a reality, like Jackie did, and start your own business or become self-employed, then get in touch with us! Call us on 0151 706 8111 or email hello@thewo.org.uk

"I Could Feel My Mood Lift Week By Week" - Linda Reflects on 'Change It' Experience

Change It: Progress to Success is all about empowering women to realise their true potential and turn that potential into success. We’ve met some fantastic women in the past year, all looking to make positive change in their life and begin building the future they really want.

We love nothing more than shouting about the successes of the women who have completed the programme. Today we’d like to introduce you to Linda, who recently recently completed Change It and has a wonderful story to tell ..

“My name is Linda, I’m 57 and I recently attended the “Change It” course. Someone who had completed the course highly recommended it to me, believing it had helped her so much.

At the time I was not in a very good headspace. Being a single parent for 18 years had not been an easy ride (as I am sure most single mums will relate to!). Financial struggles had, over the years, taken its toll and my confidence and self-esteem had taken a bit of a beating. However, I still had a bit of fight in me and, with the full support of my three children, I undertook a degree in English Language and Education Studies. My intention was to travel and teach English as a second language.

However, 5 days after completing my degree, a bad attack of sciatica left me on my stomach on the floor (literally) for almost 6 weeks. Long story short, I had severe disc problems in my back but surgery was too risky and I was told nothing could be done except for pain relief as and when needed. My hopes were dashed and I became quite severely depressed. Where did I go from here?

I felt I had no sense of purpose (Wow, I’d forgotten how low I’d become until writing this!). Jobs I had done over the years had been to fit in around my kids and I really wanted it to be “my time” now they were young adults.

I attended a few therapy classes to help with my low mood; anxiety management, mindfulness, CBT and then became aware of “Change It” whilst attending one of these classes. The person who told me about it was so enthusiastic and really sold it so I thought I’d give it a go… and I was glad I did! Each session was filled with positivity. Our Tutor, Jenny was so good and each minute was packed with enjoyable exercises and delivered in such a thorough and professional way. We all got on so well and had lots of fun and l came away eager for the following week.

I honestly felt as though this course had been designed for me specifically. It was so reassuring to know that the way I had been feeling was not uncommon. I have always been a “glass half full” kind of person but was now full of self-pity and, to be honest, not liking myself very much. But, each session covered all of this and I could literally feel my mood lifted week by week. By the end of the five week course I felt that I could face what life has to offer, good or bad, and have the confidence once again to deal with it.

Even my eldest daughter, who lives in Australia noticed a positive change in me each time we spoke via skype. She said I seemed so much happier now. And the best thing was that I didn’t feel like I would slip back as the sessions were full of achievement, challenges and action plans which I can refer to whenever I feel I need to.

I am now in a much better place emotionally; I feel I am taking back control of my life. Don’t get me wrong, I know I still have quite a way to go to full recovery but for the first time in years I feel hopeful again and am actually feeling excited about the next chapter of my life.

So, if you’re reading this and thinking “Is this course for me?” I would say to you “YES IT IS!” I would recommend this course for everyone, young or old, happy or sad. It will equip you with the necessary tools to improve (or maintain) your confidence and you will have such a fun time in the process,

I promise!”

Thanks to Linda for sharing her incredible story!

We have a number of Change It programmes taking place in Liverpool’s Children’s Centres and here at The Women’s Organisation:

✊♀️ ‘Women Are Our Sisters, Not Our Competition’ International Women's Day 2018 at The Women’s Organisation

As another International Women’s Day passes by we take our time to reflect on the day… and we can truly say this one was one of our favourites!

International Women’s Day is a day of coming together to support your fellow women and this is exactly what we did at 54 St James Street! We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who attended our event and got involved in celebrating International Women’s Day 2018 with us!

It's always a busy time for us at The Women's Organisation and this year was no exception - We were joined by over 80 women to celebrate the day and hear from our 4 Panelists (Jo Anderson, Jayne Smith, Councillor Liz Parsons and Michelle Charters) speaking at our International Women’s Day theme ‘Women are our sisters, not our competition’ which was all about the power and support that can be received from women in our lives and communities.

Our Panelists with CEO of The Women's Organisation Maggie O'Carroll and Event Chair Pamela Ball

Joined by our event chair Pamela Ball, our panel shared their backgrounds, times in which they had faced challenges and how they dealt with them, but also some light-hearted inspiring stories about the numerous women that had supported them and continue to support them in their life before opening the discussion up to our 80 guests.

Many topics were discussed during the 2-hour event ranging from education, getting involved within the local community and information on where to seek help and support.During the event we also asked our guests how they would pledge to #PressforProgress which was IWD2018’s key theme and here are some of the responses…

I, pledge to #PressforProgress by...
We asked our guests how the event changed their perception of other women and in what way and some of the responses included “Get more involved in local politics”, “To actively seek out some young women who I can coach” and “It reminds me that there are women out there willing to help, to challenge systems, to share skills and to ultimately support each other to succeed”

They all sound absolutely brilliant!

We also received some great feedback from the women that attended our event:
“I feel empowered!”
“Fabulous inspiring women making up the panel”
“Inspirational session”
“Look forward to connecting with The Women’s Organisation in the future”
“Brilliant day! Inspiring and empowering”
“Good day – inspiring and empowering”

We had such a great day celebrating International Women's Day and happy that we could be in an environment full of inspirational women!

We'd like to take this opportunity to thank LCVS Together for Liverpool for Good for funding our event, our panel and also the women who took their time to attend the day.
